Why do you need limestone chippings in a condensating boiler soakaway?

One of the bi-products of a condensing boiler is condensation which as it is discharged is very acidic and will be damaging to the ground, and anything in the ground. In order to reduce this damage a condensate soakway,  surrounded with and filled with limestone chipping, is buried in the ground and the condensation run into this soakaway. The soakaway should be buried to its top, as close as possible to where the discharge leaves the building, at a strong run off angle to minimize the chances of pipe freezing and blocking the discharge. The soakaway should be completely surrounded by limestone chipping and filled to a minimum height of 50mm, and checked regularly for top up requirements
